The Punisher (real name Frank Castle) is the main character of the game of the same name. A Vietnam War veteran, Frank assumed the moniker of the Punisher after witnessing his wife and children being gunned down for accidentally observing a mob killing. From then on, Frank vowed to keep New York safe from crime and avenge the death of his family.
History[]
Early Life[]
Born in Queens, New York Frank enlisted in the United States Marine Corp at a young age, eventually rising to the rank of Captain before his tour in Vietnam. He married his wife Maria who became pregnant shortly before Frank left for Vietnam.
Vietnam[]
Castle served in the Vietnam War in a Special Operations Unit as a point man. Frank served alongside fellow soldier Burt Kenyon and fought in numerous engagements.
Tây Ninh Province[]
At one point during the war Frank and his squad were transfered to Tây Ninh Province. One day when they were on patrol they were ambushed by a squad of Viet Cong soldiers. All of the squad were killed except for Frank and Burt, who were held captive in a nearby village where they remained for two weeks. One day Frank managed to overpower a guard and escape from his cell, before rescuing Burt from a nearby building where he was being tortured. The two of them fled in a jeep and escaped the village.
Frank served 5 years in Vietnam, and suffered severe PTSD from his experiences there. Upon returning to the US, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the line of duty.
Death of his Family[]
After returning from the war, Frank had a second child with his wife Maria. One day, he took her and his two small children to Central Park in New York City, where they happened upon the scene of a brutal mob killing. Fearing witnessing, the mobsters killed Frank’s family ruthlessly and escaped. Frank barely survived the attack, and in the following days left the Marine Corp.
Punisher[]
After his family was killed, Frank vowed to gain revenge on the mobsters that killed them. Using his vast experience from the military, and equipped with state of the art weaponry, Frank became the Punisher and began a one man war on crime in New York City.
