Synopsis[]

Ascendance of the First Wolves takes place across the lands of Eltris and Ransiege. The player begins as a simple Ransiegean bounty hunter, who is eventually roped into a conspiracy by Eld the Philosopher. The conspiracy, based out of Baldor Tavern in north Ransiege, is plotting against the Wolves of the True, who are on a campaign to take over Eltris and formulate the “resurrection” of the gods.

Gameplay[]

Ascendance of the First Wolves plays similarly to the two previous games in the Whispers of Wolves series, albeit with a few notable changes and additions. The new player base is the Baldor Tavern, which functions identically to the hubs in the previous games. The player can level up through an NPC named Eld the Philosopher, and his apprentice Ehros. The Worldmarker returns, this time provided by Eld, and is once again used to traverse the game world. The same eight skills also return, as well as a new one, charisma, which determines the price of items at merchants.

The game features slightly less items than the previous installments in the series, with more focus on making weapons and spells unique and nuanced. Curios return from Whispers of Wolves 2 and function largely the same. The player can equip up to 3 at the same time, as well as 3 swappable weapons/shields in each hand, and 4 armor pieces.

The core combat system has remained largely the same. Weapon attacks now consume slightly less stamina, encouraging a faster and more aggressive play style. Weapon attacks can now be cancelled mid animation with a button prompt that requires exact timing. Magic remains the same too for the most part, however it is slightly less effective, and is better utilised alongside melee combat rather than on it's own. The biggest addition to the combat is a new feature known as the Defiance System, which functions as an ability on certain shields. By blocking enemy attacks, an invisible meter fills up which triggers a temporary, but substantial damage boost. The game features an expanded cast of enemies, with some returning from the previous games in the series, as well as 25 bosses.
